Professor A. K. M. Kafiluddin, MBBS, (Dhaka) MPH(USA), DIH(London), FCPS(Bangladesh) was the Founder Director of the National Institute of Preventive and Social Medicine (NIPSOM). He served as Medical Officer, in WHO/SEARO S stationed at New Delhi for about seven years. He worked as the Director. Bangladesh Medical Research Council. He is the author of Modern Epidemiology, published in 1973, Principles & Practice in Tuberculosis Treatment, Published by Longmans and Green & Company, London in 1960, Infectious Diseases printed by Mita Mudrayan in 1976, Directory of Abstracts of completed researches related to Health, Research Scientists and Researchers of Bangladesh by Ideal Printing Press, Dhaka in 1990, Disaster Preparedness for Bangladesh floods and other natural calamities in 1991, AIDS; Social Awareness and Prevention published in 1996, Population Research, Environmental Conservation and Economic Development in 2001, Research Methodology with Special Emphasis on Public Health Research in 2004 by Padma Printers. In recognition of his outstanding contribution in the fields of teaching, research and publications, the Government of Bangladesh conferred upon him the title of Rashtrio (State) honour of “Professor Emeritus ” on 30th September, 1993. BHES (Bangladesh Health Education Society) and PHAB (Public Health Association of Bangladesh awarded him the Gold Medal on 23rd January, 1994. He has been declared as one of the International Leader in achievement for his outstanding contribution in the field of Preventive and Social Medicine, Research and Publications by the International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, England for the year 1976 by enlisting his name in the 24th edition of the Dictionary of International Biography for 1996on the Recommendation of Editorial Board consisting of about 90 Scientists from different countries of the world. He is one from Bangladesh out of one lac eighty thousand leaders for achievement from different countries of world and thus this honour to him elevates the Scientific level of Bangladeshi Scientists in the world. He contributed a vital role to establish the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Diseases Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR’B), Mohakhali, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He was the President of Public Health Association of Bangladesh from 1978 to 981. He continues to be the member of the International Epidemiological Association since 1983. He was declared the Leader of the Profession on 10th July 2000 by the Hon’ble President and Chancellor of USTC.
